As an award-winning theatre director and script producer in TV drama, I built high-performing teams at pace, and I discovered a few non-negotiables that help people do their best work.

First, absolute clarity of purpose, and checking in with that purpose regularly as the guide to success. Second, the importance of creating an environment where people feel trusted and able to take risks knowing, when things get tough, they will be shown generosity and loyalty. Third, that creating great theatre, great television or great anything is all about what you're delivering to the audience or customer; it's not in service of self or ego. And fourth, you need a handful of simple practices, some collective and some individual, that consistently support connection with others, energy management and resilience.

I work with teams who realise their collective purpose has evolved without them. I support teams who don’t know one another well enough, or who don’t fully understand what each other do, and this disempowers their collective force. I coach individual leaders who are moving so fast towards performance goals, they have lost sight of leading themselves or of building deeper trust within their team.

My theatre and TV experience also gives me specialist expertise as a speaker and story-telling coach. I support leaders and organisations to shape compelling narratives that will energise and engage their audiences. Then I help leaders to find their voice and bring these narratives to life in ways that move others to action.

Alongside all this, I try to be in a rehearsal room regularly; because the mix of creativity, playfulness, rigour and focus that underpins theatre are my touchstones for being a coach.
